As you begin to work in diversity you will discover that messaging is important. The language used in the discussion can get a bit confusing as diversity is a very complex issue. The common theme of diversity is a combination of ethnic, gender and sexual identity, visible and hidden disabilities, and underrepresented groups.
The language that we use to do diversity work in libraries is important and may vary from region to region or institution to institution. A good place to start is to see if your home institution already has a definition of diversity. Keeping in line with the larger organization will give you the right language to use to make your case.
